Vieuzac and Ourout

The merger of two villages

Originally, the city was divided into two communities, Vieuzac et Ourout, gathered around the traditional market which still persists today. Vestiges of this period such as the Tower of Vieuzac, Mendaigne Tower or Urut castle are still visible and blend wonderfully with the architecture of more modern buildings.

In the heart of the mountains

At the end of the 19th century, Argelès experienced a major boom thanks to the arrival of the railway, bringing with it many tourists seduced by the mild climate and proximity to the mountains. It was at this time that the city acquired the thermal springs of sulphurous waters of Gazost and developed the hydrotherapy in the Argelesian plain. It then becomesArgeles-Gazost”. Even today, many spa guests come to the Argelès-Gazost thermal baths for the treatment of respiratory tract and phlebology. We also come here for a moment of relaxation at the Jardin des Bains, the thermal spa dedicated to well-being.

In front of this beautiful thermal establishment with facades made of brick and pebbles from the Gave stretches a large English-style spa park and a casino. It is in this lower part of the city that we find villas and hotels in an eclectic style which largely contribute to the charm of this pretty spa town!

The villages

of the Argelès-Gazost valley

If Argelès-Gazost reserves its share of surprises, the small surrounding villages also promise great discoveries. Their churches, chapels and other historical monuments allow you to continue your exploration of the valleys and its heritage far from the rain or the strong summer heat! The washhouses, mills and flowered fountains contribute to the charm of a picturesque stroll under the Pyrenean sun.

Saint-Savin

The charming village of Saint-Savin, with its pretty fountain and its half-timbered houses, is an aerial parenthesis with its unobstructed panorama of the surrounding peaks and the valley below.
The ancient and imposing abbey Romanesque church of Saint-Savin as well as its museum-treasure bear witness to its rich monastic past.
Away from the village, we find on a promontory the chapel Our Lady of Pietat. The ideal place to enjoy a beautiful view and savor a moment of calm and tranquility.

Pierrefitte-Nestalas

An unsuspected heritage

two steps away, Pierrefitte-Nestalas and its unsuspected heritage transport you in the footsteps of the royal road, the thermal road and more recently in the footsteps of workers and miners along the old tram line. Further on, the castle of Beaucens hosts one of the largest raptor collections in its medieval setting. A unique show takes place every afternoon in summer!
