Spring a season of renewal

  • Spring

While some stations play extra time, elsewhere the snow gives way to greenery. After the torpor of winter, nature takes back its rights. The days are getting longer, the flowers are blooming, the streams are filling up, the animals are waking up. A real in-between takes place: at altitude, winter is still present, while lower down, the mildness makes the vegetation flourish.

    A true duality

While in the valley the more smoothly. spring is established little by little, at altitude the SNOW still covers the ground. You will have to show up cautious and patient before embarking on high mountain hikes.

    A reconquest of space

While, for safety reasons, some valleys are not accessible in the heart of winter, during the spring the disappearance of the snow makes it possible to find certain spaces. Little by little, the Ossoue valley, the Tech dam or Gloriettes lake become accessible again by car. In a second step it will again be possible to climb the cols and to switch from one valley to another, a little patience before passing the Col du Tourmalet!

    Quiet hikes

Far from the fervor of summer, spring is the ideal season for hiking in complete tranquility in the most coveted sites. So you can fully enjoy a walk in the Gavarnie Cirque in Pont d'Espagne or the Estaing Lake. The more seasoned, equipped with ice axes, crampons or even cross-country skis, will be able to enjoy the spring snow as well as the beautiful panoramas in high mountain.

    Enjoy the awakening of nature

Season of love for some, birth for others, spring is an undeniable awake period of nature in the mountains.

    The awakening of the marmots

After spending about six months underground, it's in the spring that you can once again see their little faces on the surface. With rising temperatures, the singular and distinctive whistle of marmots is once again resounding in the mountains. From then on, they have only one goal: to eat and fatten up as much as possible before winter comes again. Perhaps you will have the pleasure of crossing some during your mountain walks.

The season of loves and births

Little by little the mountain is filled again with its inhabitants. While the birds left to spend the winter in the warm return to parade and raise their young, others take flight, this is the case of the young bearded vulture which, after being born in winter, will take flight in spring. You will have the pleasure of observing them and listening to them screaming in order to seduce their partner. It is also the period when the newborns tread for the first time the ground of the Pyrenees as for the young chamois or goats of ibexes. It is a fragile period for them, so it is necessary to respect their peace of mind.

    An explosion of colors

Whether they are trees, flowers or alternatively torrents of water, the Gavarnie Valleys are adorned with a thousand and one colours.

    The blossoming of flowers

A veritable explosion of pastel colours, the Gavarnie Valleys are full of tree species and flowers, each prettier than the next. There are even some that can't be found anywhere else and for which spring is the only time of the year when we can observe them in bloom. Among them the Pyrenean lily, Pyrenean Fritillary or the ramondia. The flowering period is quite short so do not hesitate to let your eyes wander off the path, you could have the good surprise to observe them.

    snow water

La snow melt gives rise to a real phenomenon, it is called here snow water. Some will be surprised to see the milky color what the rivers of our valleys can take. The confluences then become veritable tableaux, the turquoise mixing with the white thanks to the current of the water. A temporary phenomenon, it appears over a short period when temperatures rise in altitude.

Our spot to observe it : the esplanade behind the Gèdre ice rink.
