The wool sector

 AN CENTURIES-OLD HISTORY

In the Pyrenees, sheep farming developed with the pastoralism in the 19th century. This rearing technique is characterized by the transhumance which consists of moving the herds to reach the mid-mountain meadows where the animals can feed.

Today, breeding provides milk for the production of cheeses from the Pyrenees and meat from AOP Barèges-Gavarnie mutton. Wool from shearing is also used, which is a necessary care, because sheep do not spontaneously lose their wool seasonally. Sheep are sheared 1 to 2 times a year.

The use of wool as a textile fiber is attested from the Bronze Age in the Nordic countries.

In the Pyrenees, wool has been weaving and spinning for over twenty centuries. It allows to manufacture clothing solids intended to protect against the cold.

The manufacturing process

A smart fiber

In the spring or fall, the shearers go from farm to farm and harvest approximately 2 kg of wool per animal. Once sorted, the wool travels to different workshops in the textile industry. The first step is to wash it with hot water to remove all impurities.

Once dry, the wool loses about half of its initial weight.

Next comes the stage of carding wool which consists in disentangling, combing and airing the textile fibres. The word "carding" comes from "thistle", a prickly plant that grows along the paths. In the past, bouquets of thistles were used to rub the fleeces and obtain a softer and cleaner wool.

Today we use a carding machine equipped with rollers covered with thousands of small fine metal points which facilitates this work.

The carding phase prepares the fibers for spinning wool. We then obtain a wool veil which is kept as it is to make quilted blankets or wool duvets. But to make yarn, the veil is transported to a spinner which makes it possible to obtain a strong yarn.

The reels of spun wool obtained are then used for the weaving. For this, a loom or knitting machine is used.

FROM WOOL TO CLOTHING

Wool from the Pyrenees is ideal for making warm and durable clothing : sweaters, overshirts, jackets, vests, dressing gowns, coats, capes and ponchos. Woolen accessories such as socks, hats, scarves and gloves protect against the cold both for mid-season and for winter.

Created at the beginning of the 20th century, the "fabric of the Pyrenees" is also available in the form of Pleas ou decoration elements that add a cozy touch to your interiors!
