In the heart of the Pyrenees National Park, dogs, even if kept on a leash, are prohibited in order to preserve wildlife. In certain exceptions, dogs are tolerated if they are kept on a leash, allowing you to enjoy the Gavarnie Cirque or Lac de Gaube with your dog, here is what the Pyrenees national Park :

" In the summer, the mountains are used by breeders to graze cows, sheep, horses or goats. During a walk, you will certainly come across herds roaming freely. To guarantee the animals' peace and your own safety, do not approach the animals, go around them if they are on the trail and keep your dog on a leash.

Also think about close behind you the barriers and doors of the pastoral huts.
Some herds are guarded by protection dogs (patous). These dogs may come towards you barking. They play their role of deterrence.

You must remain calm as much as possible (do not run, shout or threaten the dog with a stick) and get around as much of the herd as possible. Our advice

Apart from the areas mentioned above, other rules may be applied in certain municipalities, remember to find out carefully before your departure.
Even if it is not obligatory everywhere, we advise you to always walk your dog with a harness and a leash for your comfort, that of other walkers but also and above all that of nature and the surrounding fauna.
Just like for you, remember to bring water for your dog as well as a small snack or treats for arrival.

When choosing a route, take into account the physical capabilities of your companion so that the effort required is not too great for him.
In summer, be careful of the heat from the ground which can burn the pads. In winter, cold and snow can also cause injuries.
Pay attention to processionary caterpillars, ticks and spikelets which represent a danger to your dog.
