Off the beaten track

Leave only tracks, discover untouched areas in the heart of winter, ski virgin slopes ... The pleasures of ski touring are many and allow you to progress in a completely natural enviroment in both a contemplative and sporting way.

The idea is simple: climb to the top of a snowy slope using "seal skins" fixed to the bottom of your skis and then descend unrestricted through white stretches of ungroomed snow. Experience total immersion in an untouched environment, while enjoying breathtaking panoramas!

Beginner or advanced, qualified professionals offer excursions for all levels. The Gavarnie valley playground is a vast one.

Freeride descent of the Pic du Midi

A must for lovers of big thrills, the descent from the summit of the Pic du Midi... After a cable car ride, you can enjoy the incredible panoramic view of the Pyrenees mountains at an altitude of 2877m, before your start for a memorable descent. A legendary off-piste, a unique freeride area in the Pyrenees! 

There are three possibilities for skiers:   

-  from the Barèges side to the Tourmalet chairlift, the Pic du Midi Unlimited package includes the return by the ski lift.  

- From La Mongie side to Artigues-Campan, the "La Coume du Pic" itinerary with its 1700 m difference in altitude and 10 km of descent. Return to the foot of the slopes by free shuttle bus.  

- for the beginners skiers, departure from the Taoulet intermediate station at 2341 m then for the descent you can choose the "la Jaune" slope, "la Verte"slope or "la Violette"slope. 

This freeride area is reserved for good skiers, and it is recommanded to use a guide or instructor to enjoy it safely. 

Off-piste descent in Luz Ardiden

For your powder sessions at Luz Ardiden : the meeting point is at the arrival of the Cloze chairlift. Enjoy a remarkable view on the Pyrenees. Then, you will have access to the off-piste domain of Bernazaou : a downhill of 1 250m of drop, in the heart of a preserved area. Guides and ski instructors are available for organize your outings.

To be tested : the freerando

Notice to skiers : to get off the beaten tracks, try the freerando ! Start in a ski resort, use the ski lifts to go the highest possible and after a short climb with your ski touring, it’s time for a downhill accross the virgin slopes.

Escape from crowds, and approach climbs adapted to your level, for beautiful descents. All alpin skiers that feel comfortable on red tracks and off-pistes can try the freerando. The playground is wide in the slopes of the Gavarnie Valleys !

Event | the Altitoy 7 and 8 of march 2020

On March 7 and 8, 2020, Altitoy, the largest alpine ski competition in the Pyrenees, will once again take its place in "La Grande Course", as it does every two years, with the Pierra Menta, the "Patrouille des Glaciers" or the Adamello Ski Raid.

This international race, which is run as a team, offers two courses: a technical and challenging one and a softer one, on the slopes of the Pic du Midi and on the Luz Ardiden sector. We are expecting nearly 700 participants of all nationalities, like the multiple world champion of alpine skiing, Kilian Jornet who was in the game in 2016 and 2018!
