30 An exceptional territory
This park is one of the richest in France in terms of flora. It protects 1000 species of beetles, 150 plant species and 300 species of butterflies. It is also home to endangered raptors such as the bearded vulture. Hiking in the summer or snowshoeing when everything is covered with snow, the 3 cirques (Gavarnie, Estaubé et Troumouse) are on the heart of the Pyrenees national Park and are a truelly gateway for discover it !
Missions of the Pyrenees National Park
Created in 1967, the Pyrenees national park works for the harmonious development of its villages, whilst respecting nature and the mountains as well as human life and pastoral activity. It is home to a rich, fragile and preserved fauna and flora. To preserved this exceptional heritage and better understand it, instructors are involved in prevention and come to meet you.
The Pyrenees national park is a protected and regulated territory that is home to a unique fauna and flora. For the safety of wild animal species and herds in the summer, dogs are strictly forbidden in its central part, excluding the path to the Gavarnie Cirque and access to Lake Gaube using only the chair lift. Created in 1967, the Pyrenees national park works for the harmonious development of its villages, whilst respecting nature and the mountains as well as human life and pastoral activity. To preserve this exceptional heritage, some simple rules must be respected, such as no fires or bivouacking in any area whatsoever.

These information centres plays an essential role in welcoming, informing and raising awareness. The centres regularly shows films on fauna and flora which are followed by an organised discussion. A permanent exhibitions on Pyreneism, hydoelectricity and fauna and flora tells us more about the soul of this authentic area. Throughout the year, photo exhibitions and paintings by local artists bring these places to life, and rich documentation on local flora and fauna is available.
The "Maisons du Parc national des Pyrénées" info centers welcome you all year round at Gavarnie, Arrens-Marsous, Luz et Cauterets. In July and August, also an information point at the Plan d'Aste in Val d'Azun. A one-hour walk punctuated by interpretation panels around the water, the rock or the forest, to be discovered with the whole family; labelled Tourism and Handicap.
