About us

Nowhere else could this place of history have been: facing the Cirque de Gavarnie, famous Pyreneists, lovers of these mountains, have the privilege of resting there.
From 1929, within the framework of national measures of the Direction des Beaux-Arts in favor of abandoned tombs, Louis LE BONDIDIER worked for the rescue and rehabilitation of the tombs of Pyrenees throughout France. It also contributes to the upkeep and maintenance of the graves of the Pyrenees in the small cemetery of Gavarnie. In May 1930, a mass was said there for the pyreneist Henri BÉRALDI. On April 17, 1932, responding to the request of Louis LE BONDIDIER, the Municipal Council of Gavarnie "granted a free concession in the cemetery for the body of Father Ludovic GAURIER". From then on, concessions are granted, at the request of the families of pyreneists or the associations of pyreneists for "a posthumous right of citizenship". The concessions, recognitions and memorial plaques for the climbers killed in the mountains, have multiplied until our days in the cemetery. Thus, there are several generations of guides from the PASSET family (including Henri and Célestin PASSET), as well as other mountaineers such as François BERNAT-SALLES, Georges LEDORMEUR, Georges ADAGAS, Jean ARLAUD, Jean PRUNET, Raymond d'ESPOUY. .. There are also several sets of commemorative plaques in the cemetery in memory of those who distinguished themselves on the site of Gavarnie or in the Pyrenees but are not buried there.
