The wool sector
AN CENTURIES-OLD HISTORYIn the Pyrenees, sheep farming developed with the pastoralism in the 19th century. This rearing technique is characterized by the transhumance which consists of moving the herds to reach the mid-mountain meadows where the animals can feed.
Today, breeding provides milk for the production of cheeses from the Pyrenees and meat from PDO sheep Barèges-Gavarnie. Wool from shearing is also used, which is a necessary care, because sheep do not spontaneously lose their wool seasonally. Sheep are sheared 1 to 2 times a year.
The use of wool as a textile fiber is attested from the Bronze Age in the Nordic countries.
In the Pyrenees, wool has been weaving and spinning for over twenty centuries. It allows to manufacture clothing solids intended to protect against the cold.
